Action Alert Update: Plans for SC Coal-Fired Power Plant Suspended
Congratulations LWV. South Carolina has a victory!
After almost three years of efforts by the League of Women Voters from across the state, and our wonderful conservation allies we are proud to say we have made national strides towards providing a cleaner and healthier energy future for our children. It was the achievements and hard work of all the coalition organizations of SCSaysNo that can take credit for our victory! A warm thanks to all of our members and volunteers who worked relentlessly on the effort by attending hearings, meetings, letter writing campaigns, petition drives, lobbying our legislatures, and many other tasks that has proven a successful outcome.
In Pinopolis, South Carolina, on August 24, 2009, Santee Cooper's Board of Directors' decision to suspend the permitting process on the Pee Dee Coal Fired Plant makes 101 coal plants nationally cancelled or postponed in the United States since 2001. Reasons given for the cancelations or postponements are; community opposition, legal challenges and financial uncertainty over future carbon cost are the reasons utilities are rethinking their plans for coal.
The Santee Cooper Board's unanimous decision on Monday to suspend the Pee Dee permitting plans due to decrease in demand, fuel cost increases, gas price decreases, the proposed CO2 legislation, potentials in the renewable energy portfolio, and the possible reduction load as a result of Central Electric Cooperative Inc. contract negotiations to remove 1,000 megawatts from Santee Cooper's system and impact of the recession. With the exception of the contract negations these are much same reasons the conservation community has cited for reasons to oppose the plant.
In conjunction with the overwhelming decision to suspend the permitting for the Pee Dee plant the board also unanimously approved to double the energy efficiency loan program to $10,000,000 for their rate payers. The program goals are to increase conservation and energy efficiency, promote customer owned renewable generation and increase customer satisfaction. I hope this is the new beginning of conscious efforts to embrace energy efficiency programs to lesson energy needs. We have provided Santee Cooper with reliable sources of information on energy efficiency to prove a dedicated commitment to energy efficiency can replace the need for new baseload generation.
Please join the LWV commending the Santee Cooper Board of Directors and staff for their role model leadership in transitioning our nation to a clean energy future.
